4 Tips to Prepare For a Home Inspection

One of the last stages in selling your house is to allow a home inspection to complete the transaction. A home inspection plays an important role in identifying any potential issues that need to be taken care of before the buyer agrees to make a purchase. These problems can be wide-ranging, whether you need to replace a few missing shingles on your roof or if you need to add caulking around a leaky windowsill. Taking care of these problems in advance can save you a lot of stress while also ensuring the home inspection process runs smoothly.

Here are a few of the main tips to remember when preparing for a home inspection.

Clean and Organize Your House

A clean house is one of the best ways to make a strong impression on anyone inspecting your home. While a clean home doesn’t have a direct impact on a house inspection, it can make the inspector suspicious of how well you take care of your house if everything is dirty or looks unorganized. Taking the extra time to give your home a deep cleaning is always well worth the effort.

Inspect Your Roof

Another important tip in preparing your home for an inspection is to inspect your roof. Clearing debris and removing moss is important in keeping your roof well-maintained. Reaching out to a roofing contractor is a good idea if you notice any missing or damaged shingles. Getting these repairs done in advance will save you time and make the home inspector’s job much easier.

Look for Water Leaks

A home inspector will always search for any signs of leaks or water damage in your house. Looking for any signs of leaks in advance and getting them repaired as soon as possible can help you avoid any problems during the inspection process. Hiring a plumber will cost you additional money, but it can help expedite the approval process for selling your home.

Make Things Accessible

A home inspector will need to check many components and systems in the home.  Taking a few minutes to prepare the areas around major mechanicals and access points will help the inspector to perform his duties. The inspector will need access to your furnace and heating systems, water heater, electrical service panels, attic and crawl space access points, etc. The inspector is not permitted to move your belongings, so doing so ahead of time will ensure a smooth process and reduce chances of return trips.

If your attic, crawl space, or basement is full of all your possessions, the inspector will not be able to view the important areas. Yes, you may have to de-clutter or move items to other spaces to ensure a good inspection. If that old attic access is in the closet ceiling, and the closet is full of clothes and shelving, the inspector will not be able to access the attic. There is nothing more frustrating to an inspector than being unable to access or view components in the home. Taking some time to make the home ready will ensure a smooth inspection and transaction.

The Bottom Line

Making sure the major components of your home are in good shape is a necessary first step to ensuring a successful home inspection. Similarly, giving your home a thorough cleaning and organizing your space goes a long way towards making a good first impression.
