Lake County's Regional Superintendent of Schools Roycealee J. Wood announced today that the Attendance & Truancy Division of the Regional Office of Education has asked the local school districts to coordinate efforts to boost student attendance by addressing chronic absences. Chronic absences occur when a student misses 5 percent or more total school days, about 9 days per year, for any reason including excused absences.

The newly installed solar panels on the grounds of Prairieview School in Hainesville are set to be connected to the school and the power grid Saturday morning, signaling the start of the solar era for Grayslake Elementary District 46. John Herrin, the district's chief school business official, said at around 6 a.m. Saturday the power at Prairieview will be turned off and electricians will hook the wires together.

Support gathering for Grayslake bike sharing plan

A plan to introduce a bicycle sharing program in Grayslake similar to Chicago's Divvy bikes will be submitted next week to the Regional Transit Authority to be considered for funding. The plan calls for bike sharing stations to be installed at five locations around Grayslake to encourage residents, commuters and College of Lake County students to ditch their cars and borrow a bike, according to Daniel Buranosky, a CLC student sustainability intern.

Route 120 closed at Metra crossing in Hainesville

Motorists in the Round Lake Park and Hainesville areas are reminded the rail crossing on Route 120 near Route 134 is closed to traffic. Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko said the closure, which began Wednesday, resulted in hazardous conditions as semitrailers tried to avoid the designated detour route.
