Color Aloft Balloon festival in Grayslake

The fifth annual Color Aloft Balloon Festival will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 at Central Park, 100 Library Lane, Grayslake. The event features music, a Civil War-era baseball game, children's activities, storytelling, business booths.

The Lake County Division of Transportation will close Center Street between Route 83 and Atkinson Road in Grayslake to replace the large culvert just east of Route 83. The work will begin Aug. 21 and the road is expected to reopen Sept. 1. The detour route is Route 83 to Route 120 to Atkinson Road.

Gail Lukasik, award-winning author of the Leigh Girard mystery series, will be one of the featured authors at the AuthorFest book festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center off Hook Drive west of Route 83. Visitors can buy signed books from more than 35 local authors and participate in a community art project hosted by Grayslake Art Alliance, as well as a raffle, and a scavenger hunt. There will be children's book readings, free painting, live music and food vendors.

A $1.1 million dollar makeover of the Metra train station in downtown Libertyville is eagerly anticipated, but it is not the only stop in town village officials would like to see upgraded. The trailer that serves as the Milwaukee North line's Prairie Crossing south station was considered temporary when it opened in 2004, but 13 years later it remains at the stop near Harris Road and Route 137 in the far northwest part of town.

New and slightly used books are being collected to restock the shelves at Raymond Ellis Elementary School in Round Lake and W.J. Murphy Elementary School in Round Lake Park, ahead of the start of the new school year. Heather Bennett, Round Lake Area Unit District 116's public relations officer, said it will take a couple of weeks for administrators to sort through and determine how many books have been donated.
